Israel Grinds to a Halt for Yom Kippur Observance

Israel will observe Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, beginning Sunday evening, September 20th, and concluding Monday evening, September 21st. During this period, the country will largely cease normal operations for 24 hours. Public transportation will halt, airports will close, and most businesses and institutions will shut down. Police, the IDF, and emergency services will operate under heightened alert.

Public transportation services will gradually wind down on Sunday. Buses will run on a reduced schedule, with some routes, like Metropoline's southern destinations, ending by 2:00 PM. Bus services are expected to resume gradually between 8:45 PM and 9:00 PM on Monday. Train services will cease earlier, with "Israel Railways" operating its last passenger trains by 1:00 PM on Sunday. The rail network will remain suspended until Tuesday, September 22nd.

Ben Gurion Airport will see its last departures and arrivals by mid-afternoon on Sunday. Terminal 1's final domestic flight lands at 1:10 PM, and Terminal 3's last international flight departs at 1:55 PM. International flights will resume at Terminal 3 starting late Monday night, with the first arrival at 10:30 PM and the first departure at 11:30 PM. Terminal 1 will reopen early Tuesday morning. Ramon Airport will close Sunday at 11:30 AM and reopen Tuesday at 6:00 AM. Haifa Airport's last flight lands Sunday at 2:00 PM, with operations resuming Tuesday morning. The Allenby border crossing will close Sunday at 11:00 AM and reopen on September 22nd.

While there is no official ban on private vehicles, roads are traditionally cleared of most cars, with only emergency vehicles present. Magen David Adom (MDA) urges caution, especially with children cycling and using scooters. Emergency medical services will be fully operational, with MDA reachable at 101. Health recommendations include staying hydrated and avoiding excessive caffeine and salty foods before the fast. Those with chronic conditions, the elderly, and pregnant women are advised to seek medical counsel beforehand.

Security forces are on high alert nationwide. Thousands of police and Border Police officers will be deployed, particularly near synagogues and crowded areas. The IDF has also increased its readiness, with the Chief of Staff ordering more forces in the Northern, Central, and Southern commands, alongside increased air and naval patrols. The weather is expected to be hot, with temperatures around 28-30 degrees Celsius in major cities, accompanied by high humidity along the coast.
