Cyber Unit Warns of Hotel Booking Phishing Scams
Israel's National Cyber Directorate issued an urgent warning on Thursday about a new phishing scheme targeting citizens through mobile messages. The scam involves fake messages that appear to be hotel booking confirmations, often including seemingly legitimate details like stay dates and reservation numbers, which can increase their credibility.
These messages contain a link to a fraudulent website impersonating Booking.com, urging recipients to confirm their hotel reservations. The Cyber Directorate advises the public not to click on any links in such messages. Instead, individuals should verify their bookings directly through the official Booking.com website or app.
If credit card details have been entered into a suspicious site, the Cyber Directorate recommends immediately contacting the credit card company. It also urges reporting such incidents to the National Cyber Directorate's hotline at 119.
This follows a recent alert from the Cyber Directorate regarding fake advertisements on Facebook and Instagram. These ads falsely offer free tickets or benefits for shows, impersonating well-known companies. After users provide their details, attackers contact them requesting an "authentication code" sent via SMS, which could potentially be used to hijack the user's mobile line.
