Israeli Cyber Unit Warns of Sophisticated Gov.il Phishing Scam

The Israeli National Cyber Directorate and the National Digital Directorate have issued a warning about a phishing message impersonating Gov.il, the official government website. The fraudulent message, sent to many Israelis on July 14, 2026, demands a fake payment and includes a link to a malicious website. The scam is particularly deceptive because it appears within an existing message thread from Gov.il on users' phones, making it difficult to detect as fraudulent.

Authorities advise recipients not to click on the link, avoid entering personal or credit card information, and to only make payments through official websites by logging into personal accounts directly. They also recommend using the Scan my SMS website to verify whether suspicious links are malicious.

This alert follows a recent widespread phishing campaign on WhatsApp groups that impersonated a promotional campaign for the popular "Bamba" snack brand. That scam used a fake survey and fabricated testimonials to convince users they had won a 500-shekel voucher.

The cyber units emphasize vigilance against such scams and encourage verifying requests for payments or personal information through official channels only.
