US Maintains Visa Ban on Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas
The U.S. State Department announced Wednesday it will maintain a visa ban on Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and several other Palestinian officials. Washington cited actions taken by their political organizations and institutions to "internationalize the Israeli-Palestinian conflict," particularly attempts to engage international legal bodies, as the reason for the ban.
This decision will prevent Abbas, who also heads the Palestine Liberation Organization, from attending the United Nations General Assembly, with its main proceedings set to begin next week in New York. This marks the second consecutive year the Trump administration has blocked Abbas from attending the meeting.
In August 2025, then-Secretary of State Marco Rubio had previously denied visas to several Palestinian officials, stating the goal was to hold them "accountable for failing to meet their commitments and undermining the prospects for peace."
