AI English Learning Startup Loora Raises $22 Million in Series B
Loora, an AI-powered English learning application founded by former Israeli special forces unit members, has successfully closed a $22 million Series B funding round. This latest investment brings the company's total funding to approximately $43 million. The startup plans to allocate these funds towards expanding its research and development efforts and growing its presence in key international markets including the United States, Europe, Asia, and South America.
Loora was co-founded by Roey Mor and Yonatan Levin, who met during their military service in the elite Sayeret Matkal unit. After their service, they pursued degrees in electrical engineering and physics at Tel Aviv University before focusing on artificial intelligence. They launched Loora in 2021, building on their AI expertise.
The application focuses on conversational practice with a virtual AI tutor that adapts to the user's proficiency level, interests, and learning goals. Unlike traditional apps with fixed lessons, Loora emphasizes open-ended conversations and personalized learning paths. The company reports over 15 million users globally and more than 200 million interactions within the app. Loora's annual recurring revenue has more than doubled in the past year and now stands in the tens of millions of dollars. The company has also expanded into the B2B market, securing partnerships with over 100 corporations, governments, and universities.
According to Loora, 72% of its users learn English to advance their careers, with the primary demographic being individuals aged 25-55. The recent funding round was led by Union Tech Ventures, with participation from Vgames and existing investors Emerge, Hearst Ventures, and QP Ventures. Loora intends to double its workforce within six months, primarily hiring for AI research and development and learning science roles.
Mor highlighted the value of the data collected from user conversations, which Loora uses to refine its learning methods and improve user retention, which has reportedly more than doubled since launch. He emphasized the global importance of English proficiency for career advancement, university admission, and overall future opportunities.
