AI English Learning Startup Loora Raises $22 Million in Series B
Loora, an AI-powered English learning application with over 15 million users, has successfully raised $22 million in a Series B funding round. The company reported a more than 100% increase in revenue, with its annual recurring revenue (ARR) reaching tens of millions of dollars. Loora plans to double its workforce to 60 employees within six months, with most of its operations based in Israel, including its Tel Aviv offices.
The funding round was led by Union Tech Ventures, with participation from vgames and existing investors Emerge, Hearst Ventures, and QP Ventures. This latest investment brings Loora's total funding to $43 million since its inception.
Loora was founded by Roee Mor and Yonatan Levin, who met while serving in the elite Sayeret Matkal unit of the IDF. Mor serves as CEO, and Levin is the CTO. They established Loora to address the significant global challenge posed by the fact that approximately 95% of the world's population are not native English speakers, while a vast majority of Western employers consider English proficiency crucial for hiring.
The company highlights that for millions, English proficiency is key to professional advancement, academic pursuits, and new opportunities, but quality personalized instruction remains prohibitively expensive for most. Loora's typical user is between 25 and 55 years old, with 72% learning English for career advancement. The company has also expanded into the B2B market, partnering with over 100 corporations, governments, and universities worldwide.
Surprisingly, a significant number of users come from the United States, where Loora targets immigrants needing to learn English quickly. Loora aims to leverage AI to make English tutoring accessible and affordable, offering a personalized learning experience that goes beyond general AI conversation models. The company has built one of the world's largest datasets for English language learning, derived from hundreds of millions of user interactions, enabling it to continuously adapt learning paths and teaching methods for optimal user progress.
User data indicates strong engagement, with individuals dedicating significant portions of their conversations to various topics, demonstrating the effectiveness of personalized learning through free conversation. CEO Roee Mor emphasized that English is a critical gateway for opportunities globally, and Loora provides a personalized tutor experience for about $10 per month, a fraction of the cost of traditional private lessons.
