Chief Rabbis Issue Guidance on Kapparot and Yom Kippur Prayers

Ahead of Yom Kippur, Israel's Chief Rabbis, Rabbi David Yosef and Rabbi Kalman Bar, have issued a significant halachic letter addressing the ancient Kapparot ritual and prayers for the nation. The rabbis determined that the cost for the Kapparot ritual, when performed with money, should be approximately 30 shekels per person, including VAT. This figure was reached after consulting experts on the cost of poultry, ritual slaughter, and associated expenses.

The letter emphasizes that the funds collected from Kapparot should be donated exclusively to Torah and charity institutions that support Torah scholars and needy families, following the tradition established by Rabbi Ovadia Yosef. The rabbis stressed that performing Kapparot with money is the preferred method, aligning with established halacha.

In addition to guidance on Kapparot, the rabbis called for special prayers to be included in Yom Kippur services. They urged congregations to recite prayers for the souls of those killed sanctifying God's name and for all fallen soldiers of Israel's security forces. Furthermore, they requested special prayers for the complete recovery of the wounded and for the success and safety of the IDF soldiers and all security personnel defending the country.

The letter concludes with a message of encouragement and unity for the Jewish people, expressing hope that through solidarity, adherence to Jewish law, and sincere prayers, the nation will be inscribed in the book of life for a good and sweet year.
