Chief Rabbis Set 'Kapara' Donation at NIS 30 Ahead of Yom Kippur

Ahead of Yom Kippur, which falls on Monday, the Chief Rabbis of Israel, Rabbi David Yosef and Rabbi Kalman Bar, have issued a letter determining the 'Kapara' donation for the year 5787 (2027) to be approximately 30 shekels per person, including VAT. The rabbis instructed that these funds should be allocated to Torah and charity institutions, thereby fulfilling the mitzvah of Kapara in a dignified manner.

While there is no fixed amount for the Kapara donation, it is customary to give an amount equivalent to the cost of a fowl, which is currently estimated at around 30 shekels per person based on market prices for fowl and slaughter. The rabbis emphasized the principle that "whoever adds, it is added to him."

In addition to the Kapara guidance, the Chief Rabbis are calling on the public to recite the prayer "El Maleh Rachamim" and a memorial prayer for the souls of brethren murdered and slaughtered for the sanctification of God's name, and in memory of those who fell in Israel's wars. They also requested a "Mi Sheberach" prayer for the complete recovery of the wounded and a prayer for the success of the IDF soldiers and security forces.
