Israeli Film 'Nez'a' Wins Award at Venice Film Festival Amid Controversy

The Israeli documentary film 'Nez'a' (Accidental Damage), directed by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Shore, has received an award at the Venice Film Festival. The film, which is based on anonymous testimonies from 24 Israeli soldiers and intelligence officers, presents serious allegations regarding the Israeli military's targeting methods and civilian casualties in Gaza.

Following the film's premiere, which reportedly received a 25-minute standing ovation, Abraham and Shore were highly critical of Israel's actions in Gaza during a press conference. Abraham stated that silence can be complicity and aimed to prevent denial of what he termed "crimes" in Gaza. He also criticized the Israeli media for largely ignoring or justifying the events in Gaza.

Abraham drew parallels between the Holocaust and the situation in Gaza, emphasizing that "all human lives are sacred, including those of Palestinians." He clarified that he was not equating the events but identifying similar dehumanization mechanisms. Shore commented on Israeli society, noting that "a large part of Israeli society loudly says there are no innocents in Gaza," and explained that filming interviewees on Tel Aviv rooftops highlighted the contrast between life in Israel and the destruction in Gaza.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued a strong rejection of the film's claims, stating that the anonymous testimonies are unverifiable. The IDF asserted that its operations comply with international law, target terrorist organizations, and strive to minimize civilian harm. The military also clarified that decisions regarding strikes are made by humans, not artificial intelligence, and that individual allegations of violations are investigated through military enforcement mechanisms.
