Singer Pink Defends Criticism of Macklemore, Cites Jewish Identity and Fear

Singer Pink has issued a lengthy statement addressing backlash she received after sharing a call to remove rapper Macklemore from Ed Sheeran's tour. Pink explained that as a Jewish mother, Macklemore's recent performances, which included pro-Palestinian messages and imagery from the Gaza war, frightened her and people she loves. She stated that her fear should not be dismissed as propaganda or equated with support for genocide.

In her Instagram post, Pink acknowledged that her initial action of resharing a post was a "quick and cheap" social media move rather than a fully formed personal statement. She reflected on Macklemore's past, including a 2014 performance of "Same Love" where he officiated same-sex marriages, and a later incident where he wore an antisemitic costume, for which he apologized. Pink stated she had forgiven him for the costume incident, but his recent actions on stage, including dedicating a song to a movement and telling Jewish audience members the message wasn't about them, felt different.

Pink clarified that her stance is not on behalf of Israel or any government. She reiterated her belief that Hamas is a terrorist organization, that Palestinians deserve a future, and that protecting innocent lives is paramount. She also highlighted her decade-long work as a UNICEF ambassador for children affected by conflict, emphasizing her direct engagement with children on "both sides of the fence."

She asserted that she never asked for Macklemore to be silenced and does not seek his dismissal or a refund. Her primary concern, she explained, is the right to express her fear as a Jewish woman without being accused of propaganda or complicity in violence. Pink noted that standing with her own people feels more isolating than she anticipated, contrasting it with her career of supporting other groups.

The controversy began when Macklemore performed at Ed Sheeran's concert in New Jersey, wearing a keffiyeh, performing his song "Hind's Hall," and displaying images from Gaza. This prompted outrage and an online petition from the IAC (Israeli-American Council). Attendees from Israel, like Michaela, expressed distress, stating they had traveled specifically for Sheeran's show but found Macklemore's hour-long segment intensely stressful and frightening, leading them to leave early.

Pink's detailed explanation also faced criticism, with some arguing that resharing is a statement and that her words were vague. Others defended her, calling her statement authentic and praising her courage. Pink eventually disabled comments on her Instagram post due to the overwhelming negative reactions.
