Israel Demolishes Hezbollah Tunnels in South Lebanon, Declares Security Zone

Israel has announced the establishment of a "security zone" stretching from the Lebanese coast to the Mount Hermon area, signaling a new phase in its operations along the northern border. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated the move is in preparation for "continued battle."

On Thursday evening, the Israeli military carried out a large-scale demolition in the Ali Taher heights, causing tremors felt in surrounding areas. The IDF stated the operation targeted over two kilometers of Hezbollah underground tunnels and facilities. Army Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir announced the completion of destroying underground infrastructure in the area, noting the discovery of Iranian-made weapons intended for use against northern Israeli communities. Zamir asserted that Israel would not permit Hezbollah to rebuild its capabilities, warning that "every village where terrorist infrastructure is established and militants are present exposes itself to danger."

Israeli army radio reported that forces withdrew from the Ali Taher heights after approximately three months of operations, which included securing above and below-ground facilities. They have redeployed to rear positions near the Beaufort Castle. The withdrawal coincided with continued shelling and demolitions in southern Lebanon, including strikes on the town of Mansouri, hitting a school, as well as Barishit and Wadi al-Hujair.

The Israeli army radio also claimed that approximately 50 militants were killed during the operations, following an offer of surrender that was reportedly rejected. Attempts to resupply militants via drones were also reportedly thwarted. The Ali Taher heights are strategically significant due to their elevation and location north of the Litani River, offering a commanding view over parts of southern Lebanon.

Zamir emphasized that Israeli forces would continue to prevent Hezbollah's re-establishment in the region and called on the Lebanese army to "demonstrate effectiveness on the ground." He suggested that the current situation could impact the understanding reached between Beirut and Tel Aviv. He also confirmed that the "Blue Line" would remain under Israeli control, with ongoing intelligence, ground, and air operations monitoring the border.

These developments occur despite an understanding reached on June 26, which stipulated a gradual Israeli withdrawal from occupied Lebanese territory in exchange for the deployment of the Lebanese army. The ongoing military actions and Israeli measures aimed at establishing a security perimeter along the border suggest a continued potential for escalation in southern Lebanon.
