Israel Establishes Strong Security Zone in Southern Lebanon After Tunnel Destruction

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced the completion of an operation to destroy Hezbollah terror tunnels in the Ali Taher ridge, a key forward base built with Iranian assistance over the past 15 years. The tunnels were intended to facilitate raids into northern Israel, attack IDF forces, and defend the area around Nabatieh.

Katz stated that the operation was conducted under heavy secrecy, with IDF soldiers and Northern Command representatives operating in complex conditions to eliminate enemy forces. He added that at the start of the conflict, the defense establishment directed the IDF to advance deep into Lebanese territory up to the Litani River line to neutralize infiltration threats and direct fire towards northern Israeli communities.

IDF forces are currently in the area, continuing to destroy tunnels and structures used by Hezbollah as bases and outposts. This activity is creating a security zone stretching from the coast in the west, through Beaufort, to the foothills of Mount Hermon in the east. Weapons and ammunition seized from the tunnels, including an anti-aircraft cannon and other arms threatening the Galilee and Israeli soldiers, were also displayed.

Katz concluded that the security zone prevents direct attacks and fire on Israeli communities, allows for control, and poses a threat to Hezbollah deep within Lebanon, while maintaining readiness for continued fighting. He wished a happy and safe new year to IDF soldiers, their families, and all Israeli citizens.
