Israel Vows Continued Presence in Lebanon After Destroying Hezbollah Infrastructure

Following the destruction of Hezbollah's underground infrastructure on the Ali Taher ridge in southern Lebanon, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz announced that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will remain in the security zone and continue operations against any Hezbollah attempts to re-establish its presence and capabilities. In a joint statement, they affirmed that the IDF will continue to destroy terror infrastructure and thwart Hezbollah's efforts to rebuild its strength in southern Lebanon, with Israel continuing to defend its northern communities from within Lebanese territory. "Any attempt to harm our citizens and our forces will be met with great force," the statement read.

The Ali Taher ridge is considered a strategically significant point for Hezbollah. According to the IDF, the neutralized underground facilities included command posts, weapons storage, living quarters, a kitchen, and installations that enabled terrorists to remain underground for extended periods. This infrastructure was built over two decades with Iranian funding and planning. The IDF stated that the underground network spanned over two kilometers and contained dozens of rockets, missiles, drones, anti-tank missiles, and explosives. A command center for Hezbollah's "Badr" unit was also located within the complex. Videos published from Lebanon show nearby houses shaking from the explosions.

Concurrently with the operations in Lebanon, Israeli security officials held several situation assessments due to concerns of a potential Iranian offensive in response to the developments. Israel decided to maintain a high level of alert throughout the Rosh Hashanah holiday, given the tensions and previous threats from Tehran regarding Israeli activity on the ridge. However, approximately two and a half hours after the complex was destroyed, there were no official statements or reactions reported from Iran, despite recent threats of a severe response to Israel if it attacked the Ali Taher ridge.

Prime Minister Netanyahu commented on the operation, stating that Israel had destroyed "the largest Iranian outpost outside of Iran, the Ali Taher tunnels in Lebanon." He added, "Completing the mission. Happy New Year!" The operation on the ridge marks another stage for Israel in consolidating the security zone in southern Lebanon. The IDF clarified that even after clearing the underground infrastructure, forces will continue to operate in the area to prevent Hezbollah from rebuilding offensive capabilities. The central question remains whether the relative quiet from Iran signifies Israeli deterrence or a temporary pause, with a response still possible. In any case, Israel is preparing for the possibility of an expanded conflict and is currently at peak alert.
