Israel Details Operation to Destroy Hezbollah Tunnels in Southern Lebanon

The Israeli military on Friday revealed new details about a recent operation in southern Lebanon that concluded the previous evening with the destruction of extensive Hezbollah tunnels in the Al-Taher mountain range. The operation, which lasted several weeks, targeted infrastructure built with Iranian support north of the Litani River, following Israeli forces' control of the Boufour area and crossing the river.

According to the IDF, the operation culminated in the destruction of tunnels that served as Hezbollah's main nerve center, extending towards Beirut's southern suburbs. The underground facility comprised eight pathways totaling over 5,400 meters in length. Israeli forces encountered significant challenges, including mapping the facility's interior as they advanced and engaging militants. The military reported that 50 militants were killed inside the tunnels, while others reportedly escaped amidst fog. Israeli forces also thwarted Hezbollah's attempts to aid those trapped inside.

The IDF stated that the militants were offered a chance to surrender by raising a white flag, a proposal they rejected. The operation involved the use of over 1,100 tons of explosives to demolish the tunnels. Inside the facility, Israeli forces discovered drones, anti-tank missiles, and other weaponry. The military described the subterranean operation as one of the most complex undertaken by its engineering units.

Amidst the operation, Israel had informed the United States, which subsequently relayed the information to the Lebanese government. The IDF raised its air defense readiness due to concerns of a potential Iranian response, although current Israeli assessments suggest no concrete Iranian preparations for retaliation at this stage. The operation aimed to avoid escalating the conflict with Iran and Hezbollah into a broader confrontation, despite prior Iranian threats.
