Yitzhak Rabin's Sister, Founding Member of Kibbutz Manara, Dies at 101

Mignews
Translated & summarized from Mignews by baba
The story · English

Rachel Rabin-Yaakov, a prominent figure in Israel's settlement movement, educator, and the younger sister of the late Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, passed away on Friday, September 11, at the age of 101. Rabin-Yaakov was recognized as one of the founders of Kibbutz Manara, the first Jewish settlement in the Naftali Mountains.

Born in Tel Aviv in 1925 to Rosa Cohen, a labor movement activist known as "Red Rose," and Nehemia Rabin, she embraced Zionist and pioneering ideals from a young age. After finishing school in 1942, she joined the "HaNoar HaOved" youth movement and underwent agricultural training.

In 1943, at eighteen, she was part of a small group that established Kibbutz Manara on a barren mountain in the Upper Galilee. She later recalled the immense physical labor and lack of infrastructure, but also the strong conviction in their cause.

During the 1948 War of Independence, Rabin-Yaakov demonstrated bravery by choosing to remain and defend the settlement when women and children were evacuated. She served as a radio operator and medic after undergoing accelerated training, aiding wounded defenders.

Throughout her life, she remained dedicated to Kibbutz Manara, living there for over 80 years and holding various key positions, including educator and secretary. She also made significant contributions to Israel's education system as a teacher and head of an association of pedagogical colleges. President Isaac Herzog honored her memory, calling her a model of educational and public service.
