Israel Braces for Holiday Travel Chaos: Major Road Congestion Expected

Israel's Traffic Division is warning of severe traffic congestion across the country as citizens embark on holiday journeys for the upcoming festival. The heaviest delays are anticipated to peak around 4:00 PM on Friday, September 11, 2026, approximately two hours before the holiday begins. Major highways, including Routes 1, 6, 2, 4, 65, and 77, are expected to be particularly impacted.

Specific problem areas include Route 1 and Route 443, which will likely see significant backups on the ascents to Jerusalem. Route 6 is predicted to experience continuous traffic jams along its entire length, especially in central sections and northbound lanes. Routes 2 and 4 will be congested from the central region through the Sharon area up to Haifa. Travelers heading north and to the Sea of Galilee area should expect heavy delays on Routes 65 and 77.

The Israel Police are implementing a large-scale deployment to manage the holiday traffic. Hundreds of traffic officers, volunteers, marked and unmarked patrol cars, motorcycles, and observation units will be stationed at critical junctions and main arteries nationwide. The objective is to maximize traffic flow, direct congestion at key intersections, and provide rapid responses to emergencies.

Authorities are also emphasizing increased enforcement and zero tolerance for life-threatening traffic violations, including drunk driving, speeding, dangerous overtaking, and distracted driving. The public is advised to start their journeys as early as possible, stay updated via navigation apps, and exercise patience.
