Cave of the Patriarchs Roof Project Completed After Two Decades

A project to roof the "Jacob's Courtyard" area of the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron has been completed and inaugurated ahead of the Rosh Hashanah holiday. The roofing, covering approximately 300 square meters, aims to enable regular prayer services throughout all seasons.

The project, which also includes air conditioning and drainage systems, cost around 11 million shekels and was led and funded by the Civil Administration. The execution was carried out by the Engineering and Construction Department of the Ministry of Defense, incorporating specialists in conservation and archaeology.

Discussions and planning for the roofing project began as early as 2007, alongside efforts to install an elevator and improve access to the holy site. However, progress was stalled for years due to opposition from the Muslim side. A lengthy process involving expropriation and the transfer of authorities from the Hebron municipality eventually paved the way for the construction.

Jacob's Courtyard was previously exposed to the elements, causing difficulties for worshippers during rain and extreme heat. The new permanent roof will protect visitors and ensure uninterrupted prayer services. The installation of air conditioning and improved drainage systems are intended to enhance the comfort of the public.

The completion of this project marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to make the Cave of the Patriarchs more accessible and comfortable for visitors and worshippers.
