Health Ministry Warns of Genetic Test Errors Affecting Cancer Risk
Israel's Ministry of Health has alerted the public to a technological incident impacting genetic testing for cancer predisposition, specifically concerning BRCA1 gene mutations. These mutations are linked to a significantly increased risk of aggressive breast and ovarian cancers, making accurate testing critical. A state audit of over 90,000 genetic analyses revealed that approximately 100 samples may have yielded false-negative results, potentially leaving individuals unaware of their genetic risk.
The "Gamidor" laboratory services company is responsible for the technical malfunction. The Ministry of Health stated that developers have resolved the software and hardware issues causing incorrect biomaterial interpretation. To mitigate health risks, genetic laboratories are contacting affected individuals directly to schedule repeat blood tests. Patients who have not been contacted are advised that their results are considered accurate and no further action is needed.
