Hapoel Jerusalem Dominates Maccabi Ashdod in Season Opener

Hapoel Jerusalem officially kicked off their 2026/27 season in impressive fashion, defeating Maccabi Ashdod 110-77 in their first game of the Winner's Cup group stage. Kenny Lofton Jr. led the charge with 23 points, igniting a significant run in the third quarter that allowed Jerusalem to pull away decisively.

Despite a strong start from Ashdod, who shot exceptionally well early on, Jerusalem's depth and defensive adjustments began to take effect. After a close first half, with Jerusalem leading only 51-50, the team emerged with renewed energy. They imposed an aggressive defense, limiting Ashdod to just 10 points in the third quarter while scoring 33.

Lofton Jr. was instrumental in a 9-0 run, scoring all the points himself, and dominated the paint. Supported by strong performances from Jalen Smith, who made his debut, and Shyke Milton, Jerusalem built a substantial lead. The team also demonstrated excellent ball control, committing only 4 turnovers.

However, the victory was tempered by an ankle injury to Yuval Sussman, who was playing his first official game since a knee injury. Sussman will undergo further evaluation, adding to Jerusalem's concerns as they are already without star player Jared Harper for several months.

Jerusalem's next opponent will be Hapoel Be'er Sheva/Dimona, whom they will host next Friday, aiming to maintain their perfect start and secure a direct path to the semifinals. Ashdod will face Be'er Sheva/Dimona next Tuesday.
