Argentina Files Criminal Complaint Against Israeli Oil Firm Navitas Petroleum

The Argentine government announced its intention to file a criminal complaint against the Israeli company Navitas Petroleum, its subsidiaries, partners, and executives. Argentina alleges that the company's oil exploration and production activities in the Falkland Islands, specifically at the Sea Lion field, are being conducted without Buenos Aires' authorization.

This legal action follows broader sanctions initiated by Argentina over the weekend against 45 entities and individuals involved in oil operations in the disputed islands. The Sea Lion project, located approximately 220 kilometers north of the Falklands, is operated by Navitas, which holds a 65% stake, with the remaining 35% owned by the British company Rockhopper. The project is currently in its development phase, with initial oil production anticipated to commence in March 2028, aiming for approximately 50,000 barrels per day in its first stage. The total investment in the project is estimated at $2.2 billion.

The dispute over the Falkland Islands dates back nearly 200 years, escalating into a 74-day war in 1982, which resulted in a British victory. Despite the islands remaining a British overseas territory, Argentina continues to assert its sovereignty claims. Argentine President Javier Milei has vowed to pursue legal avenues, threatening sanctions and criminal proceedings against companies and their management involved in oil activities in the region, which Argentina claims are exploiting its resources.

In response to the Argentine government's announcement, Navitas Petroleum stated, "We operate under the law of the Falkland Islands, with the approval of the Falkland Islands government and the full support of the British government. We emphasize that the law is our guide. We have always acted, and will continue to act, in accordance with the law." The company further clarified that it is not a party to the dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom and does not anticipate that the recent developments will significantly impact the project's development work or timelines.
