Italy Becomes Top Destination From Tel Aviv With Expanded Direct Flights

Italy has emerged as a prime destination for Israeli travelers, with airlines significantly expanding direct flight options from Ben Gurion Airport (TLV). Bluebird Airways recently launched a new route to Bologna, operating three times weekly and starting at approximately $135 one-way. This addition aims to provide Israelis with convenient access to a popular region in northern Italy. The Greek airline, owned by Israelis, is set to increase direct flights to Rome and Naples starting September 17, adding to its existing routes to Bologna, Bergamo, and Milan.

Wizz Air is also boosting its Italian offerings, resuming flights to Catania with four weekly services and to Venice with three weekly services. The airline is further increasing its flights to Rome and Milan to 14 per week, and to Naples up to seven weekly. These expanded services mean Israeli tourists now have access to over 10 different destinations in Italy, operated by carriers including El Al, Israir, and Arkia. During the upcoming holiday and autumn season, at least 11 Italian cities will be accessible, including major hubs like Rome and Milan, as well as other popular spots like Verona, Naples, and Bari.

The surge in flights reflects Italy's growing popularity as a travel destination for Israelis. In July, approximately 180,000 passengers flew to Italy, making it the third most popular destination after Cyprus and Greece. This accounted for about 7.8% of all passenger traffic at Ben Gurion Airport, an increase from 5.84% in the same period last year. From January to July, around 640,000 Israelis traveled to Italy, representing 7.5% of total airport traffic. Rome and Milan are leading in booking searches, followed by Catania, Verona, and Naples.

Average round-trip flight prices to Italy from Israel start around $350, with prices peaking in early October and decreasing towards the end of the month. Significant price variations exist between airlines for the same routes. For example, flights to Rome can range from $150 on Wizz Air to over $425 on El Al, which includes a checked bag. Similar disparities are seen for Milan. However, flights to Verona show smaller price gaps between carriers. These price differences are attributed to factors such as high demand from major Israeli airlines, flexibility in cancellations and changes, and included amenities like carry-on baggage.

Experts advise travelers to compare prices not only between destinations but also between airlines and travel dates to secure the best deals. Flexibility can lead to significant savings, especially for popular routes like Rome, Milan, and Naples, where price differences can exceed 160%. The expanded flight network is enabling Israelis to explore less-traveled regions of Italy, combining cultural, culinary, natural, and beach experiences, catering to a desire for new discoveries beyond the usual tourist paths.
