U.S.-Israeli Citizen Freed From Tehran Prison After Three Years
An American-Israeli dual citizen, identified as 71-year-old jeweler Mehran Hakimi, has been released from Tehran's Evin Prison after serving three years of a four-year sentence. Hakimi, who was born in Iran and resides in New York, was arrested in the summer of 2023 upon arriving in Iran to visit relatives. Iranian authorities charged him with visiting Israel over a decade prior for a religious ceremony.
During his imprisonment, Hakimi's family reported that he suffers from aggressive bladder cancer and was denied adequate medical treatment. His current health condition following his release has not been disclosed. While released before completing his full sentence, reports indicate that Hakimi is currently barred from leaving Iran and returning to the United States.
