Iranian-American Prisoner Freed After Serving Time for Israel Visit
A 71-year-old Iranian-American jeweler, Kamran Hejmati, was released from Tehran's Evin prison over the weekend. Hejmati, who suffers from an aggressive form of cancer, had been imprisoned for several years after his arrest in 2023. According to Channel 14, the reason for his detention was a religious trip to Israel.
Hejmati, originally from Iran and a resident of New York, was apprehended by security forces while visiting relatives. The Iranian judicial system sentenced him to four years in prison for visiting Israel over a decade ago to attend a religious ceremony. His family repeatedly emphasized his urgent need for specialized medical care due to his severe cancer, which he was denied in prison.
Despite his early release, Iranian authorities have imposed a strict travel ban on Hejmati, preventing him from returning to his family in the United States. Information regarding his current health condition remains limited.
