Israeli Supreme Court Chief Justice Releases Reservist Accused of Contact with Iranian Agent to House Arrest

Israeli Supreme Court President Justice Isaac Amit ordered the release of a reservist soldier accused of contact with an Iranian foreign agent to house arrest with electronic monitoring. The soldier, who served in an Air Force unit, admitted to the charges during investigation. According to the indictment filed in January 2025, he and another soldier in a sensitive position posted pro-Iranian graffiti and signs in exchange for payment from a foreign agent representing a country at war with Israel.

Despite negative probation reports indicating the accused did not fully accept responsibility and recommending against house arrest due to the danger he posed, Justice Amit cited prolonged legal proceedings and harsh detention conditions as reasons for allowing electronic monitoring instead of continued incarceration. The criminal case is in an advanced stage, with the prosecution phase concluded.

Journalist Avishai Greenzeit criticized the decision as puzzling, emphasizing the seriousness of the accused’s actions during wartime and his lack of basic responsibility. The accused is also charged with evidence destruction. Notably, despite the offenses involving the Telegram app, no restrictions were imposed on his smartphone or internet use during detention.
