Israeli Held in Iraq Faces Renewed Release Efforts After Death Sentence Overturned

Renewed calls for prayer are being made for Binyamin Ben Limor (Hussain), an Israeli citizen who has been imprisoned in Iraq for nearly a decade. Activists and international figures are intensifying efforts to secure his full release and return to Israel, following the commutation of his death sentence.

Hussain's ordeal began in 2014 when he visited his elderly grandparents in Iraqi Kurdistan. As the ISIS terrorist organization spread in the region, Hussain reportedly joined local residents in defending against the militants. In 2015, he was allegedly ambushed by a taxi driver who recognized him as a Hebrew speaker and threatened to hand him over to ISIS. A struggle ensued, during which the driver was injured and later died, leading to Hussain's arrest, alleged torture, and eventual conviction.

In 2020, a Kurdish court sentenced Hussain to death by hanging. However, several months ago, an unprecedented effort by rabbis, activists, and international lawyers led to the overturning of the death sentence. This was reportedly achieved through a "sulha" (reconciliation) agreement with the deceased driver's family, who agreed to forgo the death penalty in exchange for a ransom payment. A large fundraising campaign among Jewish communities worldwide reportedly raised the necessary sum, and the court reduced his sentence to a lesser prison term.

Despite the removal of the immediate death threat, Hussain remains incarcerated in a prison near the Iraq-Iran border, awaiting the completion of remaining legal and bureaucratic procedures. Current efforts are focused on achieving his complete release and swift departure from Iraq to Israel. Those involved emphasize that while significant progress has been made, the public is urged to continue praying for his speedy release and well-being.
