Rabbi Sentenced to 18 Years for Fraudulent Rape and Financial Crimes

The Jerusalem District Court has sentenced Rabbi Moshe Yizdi to 18 years in prison after convicting him of rape by fraud and committing sexual offenses against two of the eight complainants named in the indictment. The court also ordered Yizdi to pay compensation to the complainants for a long series of sexual and financial crimes he perpetrated, exploiting his position as a rabbi and head of a religious community. According to the indictment, Yizdi maintained sexual relationships for years with women who sought his advice and help as a rabbi and spiritual guide. The complainants consented to sexual acts based on misleading claims he made, asserting he possessed special spiritual abilities and that these acts would bring good to the world and contribute to "rectification." The judges stated in their ruling that Yizdi exploited the complainants' trust, personal distress, young age, and susceptibility, noting he did not take responsibility for his crimes or the harm caused.

The court added that Yizdi's actions were "exceptional in their scope," indicating dozens, possibly hundreds, of offenses against each complainant. The sentence reflects that the crimes in one case spanned approximately 12 years, and in the second case, three to four years. The Jerusalem District Prosecutor's Office had requested a sentence of at least 20 years, emphasizing the severity of the acts, the ongoing pattern of abuse, the deliberate exploitation of his religious status and trust, and the extent of the harm to the victims.

Yizdi was also convicted of money laundering offenses, having used some of his female students' bank accounts to conceal funds from his creditors. The prosecutor stated that the complainants had to confront a figure they viewed as a spiritual authority and testify about assaults whose effects they still face today.
