Rabbi Sentenced to 18 Years for Sex Crimes Against Followers

The Jerusalem District Court on Sunday sentenced Moshe Yizdi to 18 years in prison, along with a suspended sentence and compensation for the complainants, for a prolonged series of sexual and financial offenses. Yizdi, who held a position as a rabbi, exploited his religious authority and the trust and dependency he cultivated with women who were his students.

Yizdi was convicted, either partially or fully, on four out of nine charges. The Jerusalem District Prosecutor's Office had sought a sentence of at least 20 years, plus a suspended sentence, significant compensation for the victims, a fine, and the confiscation of a property and other funds. Prosecutors argued that Yizdi systematically and continuously exploited his religious and social standing, the trust of his students, and their personal and religious distress to commit sexual offenses.

The court's ruling stated that Yizdi engaged in sexual relationships over an extended period with women who sought his counsel and help as a rabbi and spiritual leader of a religious community. The complainants consented to these acts based on fraudulent representations by Yizdi, who claimed to possess special mystical powers and that the sexual acts would bring good to the world and effect repair. The court noted that Yizdi's actions harmed the victims' physical and mental integrity, their bodily autonomy, and their ability to make informed decisions. His conduct also undermined the values he was supposed to represent as a rabbi and community leader, values the victims sought from him, such as Torah study and observance of commandments.

The ruling further detailed that Yizdi committed these offenses based on fraudulent claims, exploiting the trust placed in him by the complainants, their personal distress, their young age, and their susceptibility to influence.
