Netanyahu Orders Evacuation of Outposts Under US Pressure

Israeli security forces are on high alert amid rising tensions in the West Bank, with officials warning of an impending wave of terror attacks. Despite a current sense of calm, the military is stretched thin, working around the clock to prevent attacks, while facing increasing international diplomatic pressure and friction around settlement points. Security sources report a significant surge in intelligence and thwarted attacks, with dozens of plots, some already in motion, being foiled weekly. These attempts are increasingly driven by organized local cells, often receiving direction from Iran and its allies, rather than lone actors.

Recent operations have led to the capture of several militant cells planning immediate attacks, including one group armed with M16 rifles near Ramallah. Explosive devices were also found in the Askar refugee camp. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has unusually addressed the situation, emphasizing the need to counter these threats. The Israeli security establishment is also concerned about the growing number of unauthorized Israeli outposts in the West Bank, with 15 to 20 located in Areas B, which are under Palestinian civil control but Israeli security control.

Netanyahu has directly ordered the evacuation of outposts in Area B, reportedly under significant pressure from the US administration, which is worried about escalating incidents in these zones. The Prime Minister has also instructed ministers to support IDF commanders and refrain from public criticism. However, these evacuations are proving to be a cyclical problem, with settlers often returning to evacuated sites.

Adding to the complex security landscape are the upcoming Palestinian Authority elections. Israeli security agencies are closely monitoring Hamas's efforts to influence the election lists. There is a low probability of elections proceeding as planned, as Israel aims to prevent Hamas officials from gaining senior positions. The potential for new leadership to emerge, given the current low standing of both Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas, is a significant concern.

In anticipation of potential escalations, particularly with the High Holidays approaching, the IDF is reinforcing its presence in the West Bank by adding at least two battalions starting Rosh Hashanah. A senior division command is on high alert and ready to assume control of the sector south of Jerusalem, a move not seen in years. Large-scale drills are planned to ensure readiness for any deterioration of the security situation.
