Israeli reports say Maccabi Tel Aviv have still not appointed a coach for next season, even after Steven Wehner was named sporting director a few days ago. Mexican media have identified one of the leading candidates, Efraín Juárez, as the coach who rejected the club.
According to journalist David Faitelson, Juárez, who most recently coached Pumas in Mexico, had been in talks with Maccabi Tel Aviv and with Mallorca. In the end, he chose to join Gremio, described as Wehner’s former club.
Juárez has worked under Ronny Deila at three different teams, New York City FC, Standard Liège and Club Brugge. His résumé also includes notable signings at Pumas, including veteran goalkeeper Keylor Navas and Aaron Ramsey.
He has also coached Atlético Nacional, one of Colombia’s biggest clubs. The report leaves Maccabi Tel Aviv still searching for a head coach ahead of the new season.
