Mexican coach Efraín Juárez, who recently managed Pumas and had been a candidate for Maccabi Tel Aviv, has instead taken over Hungarian club Győr. Israeli reports said Juárez was in talks with Maccabi and Mallorca, but ultimately chose Győr, the former team of Maccabi's new sporting director Steven Van Haren, and was officially presented there today.
The development comes days after Van Haren was appointed to his role at Maccabi Tel Aviv, while the club still has no head coach for next season. According to reporter David Faitelson, Juárez had been a serious option for the Israeli side before rejecting the move.
Juárez, 38, previously worked under coach Ronny Deila at three clubs, New York City FC, Standard Liège and Club Brugge. His résumé also includes notable signings at Pumas, where he brought in veteran goalkeeper Keylor Navas and Aaron Ramsey, and a coaching stint at Atlético Nacional, one of Colombia’s biggest clubs.
As a player, Juárez was a right back and spent most of his career in Mexico. He also passed through Barcelona’s youth system, as well as Celtic, Club América, Monterrey and Zaragoza.
