Maccabi Tel Aviv is still searching for a coach for next season, even after Stephen Vanehren was appointed sporting director a few days ago. Israeli outlet Sport 5 reported, based on Mexican journalist David Faitelson, that Efraín Juárez, who most recently coached Pumas in Mexico, had been in negotiations with Maccabi Tel Aviv and Mallorca but ultimately chose to sign with Hungarian side Győr, where he was officially presented on Tuesday.
The report said Juárez had previously worked under coach Ronny Deila at three clubs, New York City FC, Standard Liège and Club Brugge. It also highlighted his résumé as a builder of notable squads, including bringing goalkeeper Keylor Navas and Aaron Ramsey to Pumas.
Juárez, 38, has also coached Atlético Nacional, one of Colombia’s biggest clubs. Before moving into coaching, he played as a right back for most of his career, largely in Mexico, after spells in the youth systems of Barcelona, Celtic, Club América, Monterrey and Zaragoza.
