Ultra-Orthodox Leader Deri Says IDF Doesn't Need Haredi Recruits

Arie Deri, leader of the Shas party, stated that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) does not need ultra-Orthodox, or Haredi, soldiers, claiming their service creates significant problems for the military. Deri expressed opposition to drafting Haredim into the IDF unless conditions are created to accommodate their religious lifestyle. He argued that an army capable of large-scale operations and striking Iran should be able to manage its current tasks without additional complications arising from Haredi enlistment.

Deri emphasized that he would not personally encourage Haredi men of draft age to enlist until realistic opportunities for observing religious precepts during service are established. Regarding the creation of the Hasmonean Brigade, a unit for Haredi soldiers, Deri stated he was not involved and that such matters should be decided by rabbis, not lawmakers.

The statement drew sharp criticism from political opponents. Gadi Eisenkot of the National Unity party responded, "Arie, it's over. This time you'll manage." Former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett asserted that the IDF faces a severe shortage of personnel and viewed Deri's remarks as an attempt to justify avoiding conscription. Avigdor Lieberman, leader of Yisrael Beiteinu, also criticized Deri, suggesting that the late Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, Shas's founder, would disapprove of the current party leader's stance.

Earlier reports indicated Deri had made controversial remarks about Eisenkot and his mother, accusing the former IDF chief of staff of shifting significantly to the left.
