Shas Chairman Deri Claims IDF Doesn't Want Haredi Soldiers
Aryeh Deri, chairman of the Shas party, stated in an interview with Kol Barama radio that the Israeli military does not desire Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) soldiers, asserting it causes the IDF significant headaches. Deri claimed the army prefers a secular force and that it is the IDF's responsibility to address the recruitment of Haredi men, not his to call for their enlistment.
He further elaborated that the military's reluctance stems from the operational and logistical challenges Haredi soldiers present, particularly concerning religious observance and dietary laws. Deri suggested that the IDF's current approach is not conducive to integrating soldiers with strict religious lifestyles.
