Freedom Flotilla Plans October Maritime Mission to Gaza
The Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) is preparing a new maritime expedition to the Gaza Strip scheduled for October, according to Israeli public broadcaster Kan 11. The planned voyage will include stops in Spain, Portugal, and Italy before heading towards the Palestinian enclave. The FFC states its objective is to break the naval blockade imposed by Israel on Gaza.
Prior to this upcoming attempt, several boats associated with the campaign have been touring Europe. The Handala II visited Norway, Sweden, and Denmark in July, while the Kate, which departed from Bristol, made stops in Ireland, Germany, and France. Organizers are using these stops to rally local populations and increase pressure on European governments.
Their demands include an end to arms and energy shipments to Israel, cessation of military and diplomatic cooperation, and the imposition of sanctions. This initiative follows a previous attempt in June by the Global Sumud flotilla. That flotilla, comprising 57 vessels and departing from Marmaris, Turkey, was intercepted by Israeli naval commandos from Unit Shayetet 13, and those on board were arrested.
