Nobel Laureate Ada Yonath, Pioneer in Ribosome Research, Dies at 87
Professor Ada Yonath, a globally renowned Israeli scientist and Nobel laureate, passed away on Monday at the age of 87. Yonath, a researcher at the Weizmann Institute of Science, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2009 for her groundbreaking work on the structure and function of ribosomes, the cellular machinery responsible for protein synthesis.
For decades, Yonath dedicated her research to understanding ribosomes. Her discoveries significantly advanced the comprehension of how certain antibiotics target bacteria and the mechanisms by which bacteria develop resistance. In the late 1970s, her research faced considerable skepticism, as many scientists believed it was impossible to crystallize ribosomes for detailed study using X-ray crystallography. Despite being called a "dreamer," Yonath and her team persisted, conducting approximately 25,000 experiments before successfully producing the first ribosome crystals in 1980.
By 2000, teams led by Yonath at the Weizmann Institute and the Max Planck Institute in Germany had determined the complete three-dimensional structures of bacterial ribosome subunits. This achievement was recognized by the journal Science as one of the year's top ten scientific breakthroughs. Her subsequent research precisely illustrated how antibiotics bind to bacterial ribosomes, inhibiting protein production, which opened new avenues in combating antibiotic resistance, a major challenge in modern medicine.
Professor Alon Chen, president of the Weizmann Institute of Science, remembered Yonath as an "extraordinary" researcher who "was not afraid to choose a path that others thought impossible." He noted that her ribosome research "transformed our understanding of one of life's most fundamental processes and opened new possibilities in the fight against antibiotic resistance." Chen also praised her as a scientist who inspired generations by daring to ask big questions and refusing to give up.
Born in Jerusalem in 1939, Yonath began working at a young age to support her family after her father's death. She earned degrees from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and her doctorate from the Weizmann Institute in 1968. After postdoctoral research in the United States, she established Israel's first protein crystallography lab at the Weizmann Institute in 1970. Yonath received numerous international honors, including the Israel Prize, the Wolf Prize, and the EMET Prize, and was a member of prestigious scientific academies. She often cited a "best grandmother in the world" certificate from her granddaughter, Noa, as her most cherished award. She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Hagit Yonath, and her granddaughter.
