Baby Food Contamination Suspect Held in Israel, Bipolar Disorder Claimed

A Jerusalem court on Tuesday extended the detention of a man in his 40s from southern Israel by six days. He is suspected of intentionally contaminating baby food with sedatives. Police investigators stated the man was deliberately involved shortly before the incident, which involved fruit purees produced by the company Prinnok. The court found significant reasonable suspicion for charges including endangering lives with poison, negligent handling of medication, and theft.

The judge emphasized the clear danger to infants and the need for further investigation, stating that releasing the suspect could compromise ongoing inquiries. The defense attorney claimed the suspect suffers from bipolar disorder, prompting the court to order a psychiatric evaluation. A preliminary assessment, however, found him fit for detention.

The investigation began two months prior following the hospitalization of three infants in the Jerusalem area. They exhibited significant weakness and apathy. Blood tests revealed traces of benzodiazepines, a class of sedatives found in medications like Valium and Klonopin. The infants had consumed various Prinnok products purchased in Jerusalem.

Sedative substances were reportedly also found in other baby food jars from the same company. Investigators are working to determine the exact source of the sedatives, how they entered the products, and if others were involved. The suspect is presumed innocent.
