Suspect Arrested in Poisoning of Baby Formula Case

Authorities have identified and arrested Yan Shamla, a man in his 40s from southern Israel, as the primary suspect in the intentional poisoning of "Prenok" brand baby formula. The case, which came to light approximately two and a half months ago through reporting by Kan News, involves the deliberate contamination of infant food products with poison, with the intent to endanger lives. Shamla is also suspected of theft and negligent handling of medications.

Details emerged during a court hearing for the extension of Shamla's detention. His defense attorney stated that police possess a video allegedly linking Shamla to the incident. A representative from the Jerusalem District's Crime Fighting Unit asserted that Shamla was "deliberately involved, and relatively close to the time of the poisoning incident." The court found sufficient reasonable suspicion against Shamla, with the judge noting the suspect's "obvious dangerousness" and the need for numerous, potentially disruptable, investigative actions.

Shamla's lawyer also claimed his client has a psychiatric history, including bipolar disorder. However, according to police, a psychiatric evaluation at Eitanim Psychiatric Hospital, conducted shortly before his arrest, deemed him fit for detention. Shamla's arrest was extended until Sunday.
