Suspect Arrested for Intentionally Poisoning Baby Food with Sedatives

A man in his 40s from southern Israel was arrested and had his detention extended by six days by the Jerusalem Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, suspected of intentionally adding sedatives to baby food sold in the city. Police consider the case serious, alleging the suspect was "involved in the intentional poisoning of infants." The court has banned the publication of the suspect's name until Wednesday. The judge stated that the investigation materials indicate "reasonable suspicion with significant strength" regarding the suspect's involvement. He was apprehended at his home, where a search was conducted, and subsequently taken for questioning. During interrogation, he was presented with various evidence and provided an initial account. A psychiatric evaluation found him fit for detention.

Investigators from the Crime Fighting Unit in the Zion region achieved a breakthrough in identifying the suspect, according to a police statement released Tuesday. While other suspects were considered, there is no indication of a nationalistic motive. The investigation began approximately two and a half months ago when four young children were hospitalized in serious condition after exhibiting lethargic symptoms and weakness. Blood tests revealed traces of benzodiazepines, sedative and anesthetic substances found in adult medications like Valium and Klonopin.

The Ministry of Health investigated a potential link to "Prinok" brand baby fruit puree purchased from "Zol u'Begal" supermarket branches. Laboratory tests confirmed the presence of Clonazepam (Klonopin) and Lorazepam (Lorivan) in the baby food jars. These are adult-use benzodiazepine sedatives. The two branches that sold the contaminated products were ordered closed, and the investigation was assigned to the Crime Fighting Unit.
