Suspect Arrested in Israeli Infant Food Sedative Contamination Case

Israeli police have arrested a man in his 40s, a resident of southern Israel, in connection with the serious case of sedatives being found in infant fruit purees. The suspect was apprehended at his home and is currently undergoing interrogation. The arrest marks a significant development in the ongoing investigation into how sedative substances were introduced into the baby food products.

The investigation began approximately two months ago, in mid-June, when four toddlers were hospitalized at Hadassah Ein Kerem Medical Center after consuming fruit puree from the brand "Prinoch." Initial tests revealed the presence of sedatives, specifically Clonazepam and Lorazepam, in both the infants and the food samples. The Ministry of Health subsequently ordered the immediate closure of two "Zol U'Vagadol" supermarket branches in Jerusalem where the contaminated jars were purchased, involving law enforcement and the Shin Bet security agency in the probe.

Authorities are working to trace the origin of the sedative substances and determine the method of their introduction into the purees. The police stated that they are investigating the potential involvement of additional individuals. The arrested suspect is scheduled to appear in the Jerusalem Magistrate's Court on Tuesday for a hearing on extending his detention to facilitate further investigation.

One father of two hospitalized toddlers recounted being questioned by police on suspicion of child abuse, a development he found shocking given he had provided the puree to his children. He expressed disbelief at the accusations, stating his children were healthy and well-cared for.
