Man Suspected of Poisoning Baby Food with Sedatives Arrested
Police in southern Israel have arrested a man in his 40s, identified as Yan Shamla, on suspicion of intentionally contaminating baby fruit purees with sedatives. Shamla, a resident of the southern region, is accused of introducing anesthetic substances into "Prinok" brand baby fruit purees with the intent to endanger infants' lives.
During a court hearing to extend his detention, a police representative stated that Shamla deliberately added the sedatives to the purees. The charges against him include the use of poison to endanger life and negligent handling of medications.
Shamla's defense attorney argued that the suspect suffers from bipolar disorder and has undergone a psychiatric evaluation, which deemed him fit for detention. The court extended his arrest until Sunday.
