Man Arrested for Allegedly Poisoning Baby Food with Sedatives

A man in his 40s from southern Israel, identified as Yan Shamla, has been arrested on suspicion of intentionally introducing sedative substances into "Prinok" brand fruit purees intended for infants. Authorities are investigating him for intentional poisoning, endangering lives with poison, theft, and negligent handling of medication. During a court hearing to extend his detention, police stated that Shamla allegedly added the substances to the purees with the intent to poison babies.

The investigation is also focusing on how Shamla obtained the medications allegedly used and whether he had an accomplice. His defense attorney claimed Shamla suffers from bipolar disorder, leading to a psychiatric evaluation that deemed him fit for detention. The court extended his arrest until Sunday as the investigation continues.

The case began in June with a joint investigation by the Israel Police and the Ministry of Health, prompted by several unusual cases where toddlers were hospitalized after tests revealed traces of powerful sedatives and tranquilizers in their blood. Law enforcement and health officials worked to identify the source of the poisoning. A significant breakthrough occurred recently when investigators identified Shamla as being connected to the case. He was arrested at his home and taken for questioning.
