Israeli Man Finds Half a Cockroach in Eggplant Salad
A 19-year-old student from Netanya, Uri, experienced a disturbing incident when he discovered half a cockroach in a fried eggplant salad he purchased. Uri bought the "Marakesh" brand salad, produced by Salati Shamir, from a local supermarket on August 30th. While eating, he felt an unusual crispy texture in his mouth, initially mistaking it for eggplant peel, but upon inspection, realized it was an insect.
Following the discovery, Uri reported experiencing stomach pains and vomiting. He subsequently contacted Salati Shamir, the supermarket, and the Ministry of Health. According to Uri, all parties promised to investigate the matter but failed to follow up with him.
Salati Shamir acknowledged receiving the complaint on September 1st, 2026, and expressed regret over the incident. The company stated that it adheres to strict quality control and food safety standards, including ISO 9001:2015 and FSSC 22000 certifications, and conducts regular pest control. They also noted that their review of complaints found no similar issues with the relevant batch and that such incidents are rare.
The company confirmed that they spoke with Uri and reached an agreement regarding compensation.
