Israel, Greece Ink $3.2 Billion Air Defense Deal Amid Turkey Tensions

Israel and Greece have signed a landmark defense agreement worth approximately 3 billion euros (about $3.2 billion USD) to establish a multi-layered air defense system in Greece. The deal, dubbed "Achilles Shield" by Greece, is Israel's largest ever defense export to Greece and one of the largest in its history. The agreement includes the deployment of Israeli systems such as David's Sling, Barak MX, and Spyder, along with advanced radar technology.

The signing ceremony took place at the Ministry of Defense in Tel Aviv, with senior officials from the Israeli defense establishment and defense industries in attendance. The deal comes amid escalating security tensions between Israel and Turkey, with Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stating that the cooperation deepens "precisely at a time when actors with hegemonic ambitions seek to expand their influence." The Barak MX system, developed by Israel Aerospace Industries, is capable of defending against a wide range of threats including aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and ballistic threats.

In addition to the main air defense system, a supplementary deal worth 26 million euros for the sale of Rafael's Drone Dome systems was also signed. These systems are designed to protect strategic sites from drones and UAVs. The collaboration will also involve knowledge and technology transfer to the Greek defense industry.

The substantial defense deal is seen as a strategic move by Israel to expand its defense exports, leveraging the operational successes of its systems in recent conflicts. The choice of Israeli technology by Greece is viewed as a testament to the deep trust and partnership between the two nations in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The agreement is particularly significant given the ongoing friction with Turkey, which has been a source of concern for Israel's security establishment. Turkey's actions in various regional arenas, including its stance on Iran, support for Hamas, influence in Syria, and maritime activities in the Eastern Mediterranean, have contributed to the growing strategic alignment between Israel and Greece.
