Israel to Equip Greece with Multi-Layered Air Defense System in $3 Billion Deal

Israel's Ministry of Defense announced a major defense deal with Greece on Monday, under which Israel will establish a multi-layered air defense system for the Hellenic nation. The agreement, valued at approximately 3 billion euros, represents the largest defense export deal in the history of both countries. The system will provide Greece with protection against ballistic missiles, aerial attacks, and unmanned aerial vehicles.

Key components of the deal include the David's Sling and Spyder missile defense systems from Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, the Barak MX system and radars from Israel Aerospace Industries, and a national command and control system. Additionally, Israel will supply Drone Dome systems to defend strategic sites against drones.

The agreement was signed in Tel Aviv by Director General of the Ministry of Defense Amir Yaron and the head of the Greek procurement directorate, Yannis Boras. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant stated that Israel and Greece share common strategic interests and face similar regional challenges. He emphasized that in a period of hegemonic aspirations by certain actors seeking to expand influence and destabilize the region, the two nations will deepen their security and strategic cooperation to maintain stability and bolster their shared interests.

This significant agreement follows previous reports of defense cooperation between Greece and Israel, including discussions less than a year ago regarding Greece's potential acquisition of anti-aircraft and artillery systems from Israel. Greece has outlined plans to invest approximately 28 billion euros by 2036 to modernize its armed forces, including the procurement of fighter jets, frigates, and submarines from the United States and Europe.
