Israel, Greece Ink $3.2 Billion Air Defense Deal Amid Turkey Tensions

Israel and Greece have signed a landmark defense agreement worth approximately 3 billion euros (about $3.2 billion USD) to establish a multi-layered air defense system in Greece. The deal, dubbed "Achilles Shield" by the Greeks, is Israel's largest ever defense export to Greece and one of the largest in its history.

The agreement includes the deployment of Israeli-made systems such as the David's Sling, Barak MX, and Spyder missile defense systems, along with advanced MMR radars. The Barak MX, developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), is capable of defending against aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and ballistic threats. The MMR radars, also from IAI, incorporate artificial intelligence and machine learning to detect hundreds of threats simultaneously. A national command and control system, led by Rafael, will also be established.

This significant defense cooperation comes amid escalating security tensions between Israel and Turkey. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that the agreement deepens cooperation between Israel and Greece at a time when "hegemonic actors seek to expand their influence." The deal is seen as a strategic move to bolster regional stability and counter Turkish assertiveness.

In addition to the main air defense system, a supplementary deal worth 26 million euros for Rafael's Drone Dome systems, designed to protect strategic sites from drones, was also signed. The cooperation will also involve knowledge and technology transfer to the Greek defense industry.

The agreement highlights the growing global demand for Israeli defense technology, driven by its operational successes. Israel views Greece's choice of its technology as a testament to the deep trust and partnership between the two nations in the Eastern Mediterranean. This collaboration is part of a broader strategy by Israel's Ministry of Defense to expand its defense exports.
