Israel and Greece Sign $3.6 Billion Air Defense Deal Amid Turkish Tensions

Israel and Greece have finalized a landmark agreement for the supply of three air defense systems, valued at approximately $3.6 billion (3.1 billion euros). This deal surpasses the size of Israel's Arrow 3 sale to Germany. The agreement comes amid heightened tensions between Greece and Turkey, with Ankara's increasingly assertive actions in the Aegean Sea and inflammatory rhetoric directed at Israel.

The defense pact, to be signed by Israel's Ministry of Defense Director-General Amir Yaron, includes David's Sling and Barak MX systems from Rafael and Israel Aerospace Industries, respectively. The deal also incorporates Greek companies, contributing about 700 million euros to the total value, and is expected to be completed within 35 months. This collaboration aims to expand production capabilities both domestically and internationally, with ongoing discussions with the U.S. regarding future aid agreements.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has escalated his anti-Israel rhetoric, accusing Zionism of aiming to destabilize the region. Israel's Foreign Ministry swiftly condemned Erdogan's statements as "wild incitement," attributing them to his attempts to divert attention from domestic issues and his government's actions, including alleged support for Hamas and aggression against neighboring countries.

Simultaneously, Turkey has engaged in provocative actions, such as flying drones near Greek islands and establishing "national maritime parks" in disputed Aegean waters, which Greece views as an attempt to unilaterally change the status quo. Greece is also planning to establish a new drone base on Rhodes, a move Turkey claims violates the island's demilitarized status.

Israel views the deal with Greece as a strategic gateway to Europe, potentially encouraging other European nations to seek defense cooperation. This follows a broader Israeli strategy to forge alliances with countries sharing geopolitical interests, including India, the UAE, and Cyprus, aiming to create a shared aerial defense picture and enhance regional security in the face of growing threats, including from Iran.
