Maccabi Tel Aviv Contract Talks Stall With Star Player Roman Sorkin

Maccabi Tel Aviv's contract negotiations with key player Roman Sorkin have reached an impasse just before the season's start. The club sought to renegotiate Sorkin's deal after fellow player Yim Madar signed a three-year contract worth about $2 million per season. Maccabi's revised offer to Sorkin proposed a three-year deal with an annual salary of around $1.2 million. However, Sorkin and his representatives found this offer unsatisfactory, and the club was unwilling to increase it further.

Sources close to Sorkin indicate his dissatisfaction stems from significant shifts in the Israeli basketball market since his current five-year contract was signed. While his salary was once considered high for his standing, it has since fallen behind that of other Israeli players of similar caliber. For instance, Tamir Blatt's contract with Hapoel Tel Aviv is reportedly valued at approximately $1.5 million per season, highlighting the growing disparity.

Maccabi Tel Aviv maintains that Sorkin has a valid contract for three more seasons and received a substantial raise offer of about $300,000 per season. Sorkin's current contract is guaranteed, with an NBA exit clause being his only option to leave. Concerns are mounting within and around the club that Sorkin's discontent could negatively impact his performance on the court as the new season approaches.
