Rare Summer Storm Brings Heavy Rain and Strong Winds to Northern Israel

Israel is set to experience an unusual summer weather event starting overnight, with rare rain showers, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds primarily affecting the northern regions. This shift follows a prolonged period of intense heat and is expected to bring significant changes, especially to the Western Galilee, Upper Galilee, and Golan Heights. The Israel Meteorological Service has warned of possible localized flooding and strong gusts reaching up to 70 km/h, accompanied by dust reducing visibility from the north to the Negev.

The storm system has already caused disruptions in neighboring Cyprus, where heavy rains and winds led to fallen trees, road blockages, power outages, and damage to greenhouses. Lebanon has also reported floods, lightning strikes, and weather-related damage in several areas. Within Israel, the severe weather prompted the cancellation of a concert by singer Marina Maximilian at Ariel Sharon Park due to safety concerns.

Authorities around the Sea of Galilee have issued warnings about strong winds that could displace swimmers and boats, urging the public to avoid flotation devices and be cautious of falling branches and flying debris. Despite dramatic headlines, the meteorological service clarified that this is not a widespread winter storm but a localized summer system mainly impacting northern Israel. Central and southern regions are expected to see mostly clouds, winds, and occasional light showers.

The storm will continue through Sunday, with residual localized rain possible on Monday, mainly in the north. Weather conditions are forecast to stabilize by Tuesday, coinciding with the start of the school year, bringing clearer skies and temperatures slightly above seasonal averages. The meteorological service advises the public to stay alert, monitor weather updates, and avoid flood-prone areas during thunderstorms.
