Israeli PM Condemns Extremist Attacks in West Bank Village Amid Hostage Claims by Palestinian Homeowner

During the recent weekend, extremist Israeli settlers attacked the Palestinian village of Kusra in the West Bank, throwing stones and besieging a Palestinian home, according to the homeowner Louis Bayrouti. Bayrouti told Reuters that he and his family were trapped inside their house for over an hour and a half, initially surrounded by six settlers that grew to more than 70. Despite calling Israeli police, no immediate assistance arrived. When the Israeli military arrived, they reportedly fired tear gas at Palestinians and detained Bayrouti and others, handcuffing them and covering their eyes, while settlers continued to throw stones. The military declared the area a closed military zone, barring Bayrouti from entering his own home while allowing settlers access. Paramedic Saddam Uday described settlers surrounding the house and pelting stones through windows.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the violence, calling the perpetrators a "small group of rioters" who break the law and harm Israel’s international standing. He confirmed the Shin Bet security service is involved in the investigation and said security forces confiscated three vehicles and ended the incident quickly. Netanyahu urged law enforcement to arrest and prosecute those responsible. President Isaac Herzog also condemned the attacks as a "serious crossing of a red line" and called for decisive government and security action to eradicate such lawlessness.

Opposition leader Gadi Eizenkot criticized the government for failing to control violent minorities in the West Bank, calling it a security and leadership disgrace that undermines Israel’s national interests amid broader security challenges. The Israeli military reported that dozens of Israeli rioters attacked Palestinians and foreign journalists in Kusra and nearby Jalud, with no arrests made so far. Footage showed masked settlers on pickup trucks during the unrest.

The incident highlights ongoing tensions in the West Bank between extremist settlers and Palestinian residents, with Israeli authorities facing pressure to restore order and uphold the rule of law in the area.
