WhatsApp Introduces Document Viewing and Plans Stronger Password Security Option

WhatsApp has announced several new features rolling out to users, including the ability to open PDF files directly within chats without downloading, a redesigned interface for CarPlay and Android Auto, and the option to share songs from Apple Music and Spotify to WhatsApp Status. Additionally, iPad users can now register for WhatsApp directly from the app using their phone number, without needing to link to a phone, addressing a popular user request since the iPad app launch last year.

The PDF feature, available on WhatsApp Web and Desktop, allows users to view and make simple edits such as highlighting and adding notes within the chat, powered by Adobe Acrobat integration. The updated CarPlay and Android Auto interfaces enable hands-free messaging, calling, and access to favorite contacts from the vehicle screen.

In a separate development revealed through a beta version for Android (2.26.29.4), WhatsApp is reportedly working on replacing the current six-digit PIN used for two-step verification with a longer, stronger account password. This change aims to enhance security by allowing alphanumeric passwords that are harder to guess. The update is still in early development and has not been officially confirmed by WhatsApp. It will remain optional, and users who have enabled two-step verification will be able to update their security code when the feature launches. The transition process details are yet unclear, and WhatsApp may guide users through switching from PIN to password or potentially abandon the plan.

These updates reflect WhatsApp's ongoing efforts to improve user experience and security, with some features already available and others in testing phases.
